Propoxyphenes are the mild analgesic agents of the opioid category which are frequently used to treat mild to moderate pain. These are also used as antitussives i.e. medicines used to suppress or relieve coughing. While many physicians prescribe it for a wide range of mildly to moderately painful symptoms as well as for treatment of diarrhea, many others refuse to prescribe it, citing its highly addictive nature and limited effectiveness. A diverse array of techniques is available to test for drug abuse and Propoxyphenes are no exception. When taken, while some amount of Propoxyphenes remains unchanged, the rest of it forms different metabolites. Both Propoxyphenes and their metabolites can be detected by various Propoxyphene testing kits which are often based on urine sample analysis by immuno-screening or lab based GC/MS analysis. The nature of sample required is often conciliatory as often companies provide kits to test all sorts of samples like blood, saliva or hair follicles etc.
