Opiate drug testing is performed to study the consumption of Opiates like Heroin, morphine cocaine etc. There many screening procedures for detection of opium and opiate derivatives in urine/ blood and body tissues. Niedbeala et al found that 93.6 % of opiates can be detected in oral fluids and concluded that “Oral fluid may be a reliable matrix for opiates detection”. Urine screening is one of the most common methods in which samples are subjected to chemical or immunological screening that might involve dipsticks and further confirmation of positive samples by GC/MS or similar analytical methods. Through Hair based morphine testing, presence of opiate derivatives can be detected for up to 6 months. However, hair testing is further complicated due to variability in the rate of hair growth and the tendency to bind with drugs. Saliva testing has been gaining popularity as a method of choice for determining Opiate intoxication. The saliva concentrations of morphine above 500 ng/ml are considered to be positive indicators of morphine (ab)use.
