How Does the Cholesterol Panel Test Work?

The Cholesterol Panel blood test is a laboratory procedure that measures the amount of total cholesterol in your blood, the amount of HDL cholesterol, your triglyceride level, and then accurately computes your LDL cholesterol value. This is the most comprehensive form of cholesterol testing available. Comparing the results of your initial Cholesterol Panel test to the results of subsequent tests can determine the progress you've made in reducing your overall coronary risk.

The specimen collection process is quick and virtually painless. Using the special finger lancet, which is included in the Blood Collection Kit, a couple of drops of blood are taken from a nick of the finger, placed on a small collection card, and then sent to a CLIA Certified Laboratory for analysis.

Since cholesterol panel testing produces a numerical result rather than a simple "yes" or "no" answer, both testing approval and professional interpretation of your test results is required by a licensed health care professional. After your test analysis is completed at the Laboratories, the results will be reviewed by a licensed physician before being sent back to you.

A special finger lancet is supplied in the Blood Collection Kit. With it, three drops of blood are taken from a micro-nick of the finger, placed on a special collection card to dry, inserted into the special mailer provided, and then sent (postage paid) to the CLIA certified laboratory for analysis. Test results are available in approximately 5 days. Results are then promptly sent back to the person who took the test and/or that person's designated health care professional.
