Otitis media is the inflammation of the middle ear which is common in children, although all age groups are equally prone to this inflammation. It is a type of infection that occurs behind the eardrum, in the middle part of the ear and is thus known as the middle ear infection. Often, this infection develops a few days after a person is exposed to the flu or to the cold. Studies indicate that a large number of children in every population suffer with at least one middle ear infection while growing up, commonly before the age of 3. There are three possible forms of middle ear infections: 1) Acute otitis media: It occurs suddenly but causes temporary inflammation. It is also known as swimmer's ear or otitis externa. 2) Recurrent acute otitis media: It occurs periodically 3) Chronic otitis media with effusion (OEM): It causes persistent inflammation of the middle ear with fluid trapped inside. It is also known as glue ear. Symptoms of this infection may include abnormal hearing abilities, bad responses to soft sounds, talking loudly, being inattentive, fever, vomiting, dizziness, to name a few. There are some ear infection check kits available in the market that test for various forms of Otitis media.
