Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opiate that exhibits partial agonist and partial antagonist actions. Buprenorphine was introduced first in the market in 1980s’ as Buprenorphine hydrochloride, an analgesic, in the form of sublingual tablets, and injectable formulations. It is a derivative of thebaine that helps in the pain relief. However, the drug was banned from the market later on when its side effects were observed. These days the use of buprenorphine is considered a sort of drug abuse. There are three main metabolites of buprenorphine: suboxone, subutex and buprenex. The buprenorphine drug test checks for the presence of one or the other metabolites or the buprenorphine itself in the blood or urine samples. There are many home based drug testing kits that make testing for buprenorphine, easier, affordable and convenient using drug testing strips or cassettes. The samples are loaded on to the cassette which tests for the presence of the metabolite called BUP (Tetrahydrocannabinol). Many kits also detect the presence of several other compounds viz. D-1-THC, D-9-THC, cannabis derivatives along with BUP.
